Vivid birdlife flourishes in the marshes of river Héraðsvötn and the easternmost archipelago is renowned for its wide selection of feathered fauna. River Héraðsvötn and the old bridge across it can easily be accessed from Hofstaðir by walking paths (6km.)  and presents an optimal stroll for lovers of birds and Nature.

Climbers will welcome taking on a pathway guided by sticks which leads  from the old church at Hofsstaðir to the top of mountain Hofsstaðafjall, as well as a scenic ascent on the banks of river Gljúfurá. The view from the top of the mountain is spectacular.

Since time immemorial Hofstaðir has been a presbytery and vicarage. In catholic times the Hofsstaðir churches were consecrated in memory of the Holy Virgin and one of its most cherished possessions was a statue of Mary which was the object of veneration by people far and near. A copy of the statue can be seen in the church.

  • Hólar í Hjaltadal (20 km) ranks among the most distinguished historical and cultural sites in the country and is highly popular among tourists due to history, sanctity and natural beauty. Hólar offers the comfort of a good swimming pool and interesting  walks. Further, the 18th century cathedral, the 14th century reconstruction of Auðunarstofa and a traditional Icelandic turf house all present interesting features for the tourist.
  • Flugumýri (Blönduhlíð region) specializes in equine shows, riding tours and horse rental. (10 km).
  • Hestasport offers riding tours of extended and short duration.  (Varmahlíð 24 km).
  • The Bakkaflöt Tourist Services offers boat rides on the glacial rivers of upper Skagafjörður. (35 km).
  • Articrafting Sailing Experience also offers boat services of the same kind. They can be raced at Farm Hafgrímsstaðir via Varmahlíð. (38 km)
  • The Drangey Island Sailing Adventure (18 km) enables tourists to experience  Skagafjörður by sea, incl. islands Drangey  and Málmey and headland Þórðarhöfði.
  • The Glaumbæ Regional Museum focuses on everyday life in the old turf abodes  and 19th. century wooden houses.
  • The Sauðárkrókur Municipal Museum (18 km) encompasses workrooms dating from the early days of the municipality and other historical memorabilia..
  • The Research Center of Icelandic Emigrants at Hofsós (25 km) was founded in 1996 to honor the memory of Icelanders who emigrated to North America between 1850-1914.
  • The Skagafjörður Transport Museum at Stóragerði -  Óslandshlíð (12 km) houses an interesting selection of vehicles and machines from the early years of  automotive transport.
  • The Historical Center of the Icelandic  Horse at Hólar in Hjaltadalur (18 km) features a 2010 Showroom on the Icelandic Horse.
  • Sauðárkrókur boasts a 9 hole golf course (18 km).
  • Skagafjörður offers excellent ski facilities in the slopes of Mount Tindastóll (33 km).
  • The whole of Skagafjörður region is strewn with walking paths which have been highlighted  in four charts easily obtainable.
  • A Tourist Center is located at Varmahlíð (24 km).
  • Historical sites of one of the most illustrious Sagas - the Sturlunga Saga can be visited through a recent historical project which has been widely hailed .

Swimming  pools are situated at Sauðárkrókur (18 km), Varmarhlíð (24 km), Steinstaðir (35 km), Hólar í Hjaltadal (18 km) and Hofsós (25 km).
